Coolmore bloodstock consultant Clem Murphy dies at 75

When Sierra Leone won the 2024 Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar, the thoughts of Coolmore co-owner M.V. Magnier quickly turned to Clem Murphy, a longtime bloodstock consultant for the global outfit. Murphy was unable to attend the Breeders’ Cup due to illness but was credited for success at the Breeders’ Cup by a number of Coolmore’s connections. In a poignant moment, the famously reserved Magnier dedicated the Classic win to Murphy, his voice breaking before he hustled away from the NBC microphone.
Murphy, who was involved with Coolmore since 1978 and was instrumental in the operation’s global expansion in racing and breeding, died on March 7. The native of County Limerick, Ireland, was 75.
“We count ourselves extremely lucky to have had Clem with us at Coolmore since the outset,” founder John Magnier said in a social media post by Coolmore. “He soon became part of our family, and his friendship was treasured by us all. Clem had no enemies and the respect of all, a perfect example for us all to follow.”
Coolmore won three races at the 2024 Breeders’ Cup. The victory of subsequent Eclipse Award champion Sierra Leone, whom Coolmore purchased in partnership as a yearling, had been preceded by Cartier Award European champion Lake Victoria in the Juvenile Fillies Turf and Henri Matisse in the Juvenile Turf. Both were bred by Coolmore connections and are trained by Aidan O’Brien, who also paid tribute to Murphy.
“Just wanted to say our very best wishes to Clem Murphy, who is usually here. Without him, none of this would ever be happening,” O’Brien said immediately after Lake Victoria’s win.
Murphy’s international influence extended deeper into the Breeders’ Cup. He had been a member of its board since 2006, and in a statement issued upon his passing, Breeders' Cup officials said Murphy played a “pivotal role” in the expansion of the event into a two-day festival.
“As co-chair of the Racing and Nominations Committee, Clem was a driving force behind the expansion of the Breeders' Cup international stallion program and played a key role in incorporating major international races into the Breeders' Cup Challenge: Win and You're In Series,” the statement read. “Clem’s wisdom, insight, strong will, and unwavering commitment to our industry will be deeply missed. He was not only a respected colleague but also a dear friend to many within our organization. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and the entire Coolmore team during this difficult time.”
Murphy is survived by his wife Barbara; children Alix, Lauren, and Michael John; and grandchildren.
