Coolbythepool takes Nancy's Glitter

Mike Welsch|May 11, 2002

MIAMI - When the overnight came out for Saturday's $75,000 Nancy's Glitter Stakes, trainer Marty Wolfson all but conceded the race to Bay Street Gal, who he thought would have things her own way on the lead. He was half right.

Bay Street Gal did set a fairly comfortable pace in the 1 1/16-mile Nancy's Glitter, only to have Wolfson's Coolbythepool run her down in the final furlong en route to a 1 3/4-length victory. It was another 6 1/2 lengths farther back to defending champion Castle-brook, who finished a tiring third. Sara's Success, the 4-5 favorite, struggled home a well-beaten fifth and last.

"I knew there was no speed in the race other than Bay Street Gal, and I thought with nobody to run with her that she was an absolute cinch," said Wolfson, who also entered but scratched Banderia from the Nancy's Glitter.

"But Coolbythepool just loves this track, and I freshened her up since her last race, which is always good for her. I thought she was the best mare here last season, although they always bet Castlebrook. And I think she's going to be even better this year."

Bay Street Gal set relatively slow fractions of 24 and 47.85 seconds with Sara's Success and Castlebrook in close attendance. Sara's Success gave up the chase before going five furlongs, with Castlebrook mounting the first challenge around the second turn.

Coolbythepool rated six to seven lengths off the leader, came wide launching her bid leaving the backstretch, caught Bay Street Gal near the eighth pole, and then gradually edged clear under steady urging from jockey Julio Garcia.

Coolbythepool, who is owned by the Town and Country Corporation, paid $11.20 after covering the distance in 1:48.47 over a fast track.
