ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Cool Kiss had to settle for second behind his more fancied stablemate Stanley House when they clashed May 17 at Woodbine. Stanley House is moving on to the Grade 3 Dominion Day on June 29, while Cool Kiss contests another conditioned allowance route at 1 1/16 miles with a $50,000 claiming option on Sunday, the finale on a 10-race card. There will be added interest on the 13-horse feature, in which there’s a mandatory payout on the Jackpot Hi 5 with a carryover of $347,853. Cool Kiss had wide trips while running competitively in the 2023 Plate Trial Stakes, the King’s Plate, and the Prince of Wales Stakes, after which he was promoted from third to second in the Grade 3 Ontario Derby. When returning from a six-month break on March 24 at Gulfstream, he ran seventh in a dirt sprint that served as a prep for the stretch-out. Most recently, Cool Kiss saved ground in fourth before angling wide for the drive and came up a head short of Stanley House, who was exiting a seven-month layoff. Cool Kiss has been saddled with post 13 on Sunday with Luis Contreras retaining the mount. “He’s been a very unlucky horse,” trainer Mike DePaulo lamented. “He shows up. He hardly runs a bad one. Stanley [House] is a very good work horse – he had trained super going into the race. Cool Kiss had a little edge having a race under his belt. They both ran winning races.” Trainer Mark Casse sends out On Thin Ice and South Bend. On Thin Ice saved ground throughout while closing from sixth to finish a lapped-on third behind Stanley House and Cool Kiss on May 17. That was essentially his second start following an extended layoff, and it’s probably a race that the 5-year-old can build on. South Bend had been idle for 16 months when he finished a wide fourth behind the classy trio of Rondure, Border Town, and Secret Reserve in a tougher conditioned allowance going seven furlongs May 11. That was the 7-year-old’s first start on a synthetic surface, and the stretch-out on Sunday should be to his benefit. Grandson lost a heartbreaker in his final 2023 outing in the restricted Steady Growth Stakes. The deep closer had a fast pace to run at when winning the first allowance condition in his June 2 comeback. Daisuke Fukumoto will ride him again for hot trainer John LeBlanc Jr. Twin City was unplaced in last year’s King’s Plate and Prince of Wales before earning fourth money in the Ontario Derby. He just missed in a tough route at this level Nov. 19 and was a pace-pressing fourth in a sprint off a winter layoff May 26. Luckman is moving out from seven furlongs for his third start off the sidelines. The inconsistent closer got a 90 Beyer Speed Figure when third in the Grade 2 Autumn in November. Rounding out the field are Lac Macaza, Dun Drum, Jump for the Win, Malibu Edge, Fighter in the Win, Rapid Test, and Tiz Romantic. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
