Controversial Quarter Horse trainer enters first-time starter
Trainer Eloy Navarro, whose recent success with Quarter Horses at Los Alamitos has been the source of controversy, has a first-time starter, I Am Going Global, entered to run in the third race at Del Mar on Friday.
I Am Going Global is entered in a 5 1/2-furlong maiden-claiming race for 2-year-old fillies. She is eligible to be claimed for $30,000. She shows a spotty pattern of published works, all recorded at Los Alamitos.
Navarro last month had eight of the 10 fastest qualifiers during trials for the Super Derby at Los Alamitos. Track owner Ed Allred has twice postponed the finals of that race; it is now scheduled for Nov. 22. In addition, Allred last weekend canceled next month’s prestigious Champion of Champions, citing concerns about testing for clenbuterol.
In 2012, Navarro was suspended by Los Alamitos stewards for 30 days and fined $1,000 for infractions related to having a syringe in his possession. He won the Ed Burke Million Futurity that year with One Dashing Eagle, who subsequently won the All American Futurity for Jose de la Torre, his trainer and co-owner.
De la Torre last December was barred from Los Alamitos after four of his horses tested positive for clenbuterol.
In 2009, Navarro received another one-month suspension at Los Alamitos, again for infractions related to having a syringe in his possession.
