Consecrate uncertain for Canadian Derby
Monday morning trainer Greg Tracy was sitting on the fence regarding running Consecrate in the Grade 3, $200,000 Canadian Derby on Saturday at Northlands Park, or opting for the easier spot on the undercard in the $50,000 Sonoma for 3-year-old fillies. In her second start for Tracy, Consecrate crushed her opponents in the $48,980 Northlands Oaks, winning by 11 1/4 lengths. She would likely be a heavy favorite in the Sonoma. Consecrate would also be among the favorites in 1 3/8-mile Derby, however.
“It’s a tough call,” Tracy said. “I was thinking of taking her to Hastings this fall for the Oaks and Ballerina, which are both $100,000 races. I am just a little worried that if she ran in the Derby, it might knock her out a bit.”
The British Columbia Oaks is scheduled for Sept. 14. The Grade 3 Ballerina follows on Oct. 13.
