Time off for Sheriff Brown
Sheriff Brown, coming off a big second in last month’s $100,000 Riley Allison Derby, is getting a little time off, trainer Todd Fincher said. Sheriff Brown was second by a head to the Grade 1-placed Nitrous in the Riley Allison at Sunland.
“That horse put a length on him and he ran back at him and just missed winning,” Fincher said.
Making his first start against winners, Sheriff Brown earned a career-high Beyer Speed figure of 78.
Fincher said Sheriff Brown came out of the race with a sore shin and will “probably be out for a little while.”
The next race in the 3-year-old series at Sunland is the $100,000 Mine That Bird Derby on Feb. 24.
Sherriff Brown is a half-brother to Sunland Park Derby winner Runaway Ghost.
◗ The Sunday card at Oaklawn closes with a maiden special weight for 3-year-old fillies that drew two well-bred runners. Paradise Bay is a half-sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Paradise Woods, and Kid Sis is a half-sister to Grade 1 winner Whitmore. Kid Sis shares a trainer with Whitmore in Ron Moquett.
◗ Direct Dial, who swept his division of the Texas Stallion Stakes series, has been named the 2018 Texas-bred Horse of the Year by the Texas Thoroughbred Association. He races for his breeder, W.S. Farish, and is trained by Steve Asmussen. Direct Dial was third in last month’s Stonerside Stakes at Sam Houston.
