Connie Swingle heads D'Amato 1-2 in Generous Portion Stakes

Connie Swingle won her stakes debut in Friday’s $102,000 Generous Portion Stakes for California-bred 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar, benefiting from a sharp start and an ideal trip in the six-furlong race.
Ridden by Geovanni Franco, Connie Swingle broke from the outside in a field of 10. After leading for a few strides, Franco positioned Connie Swingle in a stalking position behind 28-1 Sally Stanford. Connie Swingle trailed Sally Stanford to the top of the stretch before taking the lead.
Connie Swingle ($3.40) ran six furlongs in 1:10.89, finishing 3 1/4 lengths in front of 9-1 Carmen Miranda. The first two finishers are owned and were bred by Nick Alexander and are trained by Phil D’Amato.
Big Novel (9-2) finished third, beaten 4 3/4 lengths. Sally Stanford finished fourth, followed by Bold Choice, Madiha, Stopdropandroll, Cause She’s a Lady, Drizella, and Irish Wahine. Eleuthera and Zuboshi were scratched.
Connie Swingle, by Grazen, was second in her debut in a maiden special weight race for statebred fillies at five furlongs on July 2 at Los Alamitos, and won a similar race at 5 1/2 furlongs by 7 1/2 lengths on Aug. 6 at Del Mar.
“She was so impressive in her last race,” D’Amato said on TVG. “You hope they can duplicate that. She showed her class.”
Connie Swingle has earned $108,000.
