It wasn't quite as staggering as the $163.60 payout jockey Sonny Leon triggered when he piloted Rich Strike to the victory in last year's Kentucky Derby. But Leon now has a Derby candidate in this year's crop, as he orchestrated a $35 upset with Congruent in the $150,000 John Battaglia Memorial on Saturday night at Turfway Park. "Turfway Park is home and I’m so glad to be back,” Leon said. “It’s so exciting to come back home and win this race after Rich Strike ran well in it last year." Congruent earned 20 points toward the Derby starting gate with his victory in the Battaglia, which awarded its top five finishers points on the 20-8-6-4-2 scale. The race is the final local prep toward the Grade 3, $700,000 Jeff Ruby on March 25. That race is designated as part of the final round of major prep races, awarding Derby points to the top finishers on a 100-40-30-20-10 scale. Last year, Leon was aboard Rich Strike for trainer Eric Reed as the colt finished third in the Leonatus Stakes, fourth in the Battaglia Memorial, and third in the Ruby at Turfway. He drew in to the Kentucky Derby as an also-eligible, and proceeded to spring the second-biggest upset in the history of the spring classic. :: Bet the races on DRF Bets! Congruent made his first three starts on dirt, with a maiden win and an allowance-level placing, before Sano attempted to put him on turf for the Laurel Futurity in October at the eponymous track. That race was rained off the turf, and Congruent won by 2 1/2 lengths going a mile on the sloppy track. That prompted a tilt at the Breeders' Cup Juvenile, in which he finished eighth. Congruent campaigned on turf in Florida in the early part of this season, finishing third in the Pulpit Stakes, fourth in the Dania Beach, and, more recently, sixth in the Grade 3 Kitten's Joy. On Saturday night, Congruent was unhurried early on Turfway's Tapeta, and was last in the field of 12 as American Speed showed the way through the opening half-mile of 45.93 seconds. El Camino Real Derby runner-up Gilmore, sent away favored in his first start for Brendan Walsh, was the first to pounce on the leader, drawing into second approaching the five-sixteenths pole. But Bromley and Moon Landing also moved on the turn to loom as threats. Meanwhile, as the field bunched up, with the top eight runners separated by just more than two lengths, Congruent uncorked a wide run that took him from 10th to third in upper stretch. Bromley and Moon Landing continued to grimly slug it out to Congruent's inside through the lane. But Congruent was in the clear, and, under confident and steady handling from Leon, struck the front and drew off with authority to win by 3 1/2 lengths. He finished the 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.02. "Tonight, up the backside, [Congruent] was a little keen to go on with things, but I wanted to wait for another two or three furlongs," Leon said. "He was full of run and really opened up late in the stretch.” The lightly raced Scoobie Quando, already a stakes winner at this Turfway meeting, saved ground until the quarter pole before angling out to finish with good energy, edging Bromley by three-quarters of a length for second. Scoobie Quando won his debut in the Turfway Prevue in January, then was second to the promising Wadsworth, a candidate for the Ruby, in an allowance-level event. Bromley held third by a nose over Moon Landing. They were followed, in order, by Miranda Rights, Gilmore, Eyes On the King, Accident, Aristocracy, Good Heart, Freezing Point, and American Speed. Among the top five who finished in Derby points position in the Battaglia, Bromley was not an early Triple Crown nominee. He can still be made eligible during the late nomination period with a fee of $6,000 due by March 27. At that point, any points he has earned can be retroactively applied to qualification. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
