LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Although the setting for Friday’s Grade 3, $250,000 Edgewood Stakes at Churchill Downs may have been similar to the Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf from last fall at the track, six months later the outcome proved noticeably different. Concrete Rose was no match for Newspaperofrecord when eighth behind her in the Juvenile Fillies Turf, but she was superior this time. She went after the speedy Newspaperofrecord in midstretch, and powered away for a 3 3/4-length victory over her heavily favored foe. Winning trainer Rusty Arnold had been excited for another crack at Newspaperofrecord, feeling that his filly’s performance in the Breeders’ Cup was not an accurate reflection of her ability. He felt she had been compromised in the Breeders’ Cup by running on relatively short rest and over an inside portion of a turf course that was tiring after heavy rain. Friday, it rained yet again – though the course was “good,” not yielding as it was last fall, and it did not hamper her performance. Concrete Rose traveled nicely under jockey Julien Leparoux, settling in fourth as Newspaperofrecord carved out fractions of 23.53 seconds, 47.87, and 1:12.68 in the 1 1/16-mile turf race. Concrete Rose was 3 1/2 lengths behind Newspaperofrecord after six furlongs, closed to gap to two lengths with a furlong of the race remaining, and then quickly took over. She completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.34, and $13.80 in a field of seven 3-year-old fillies. “She’s such a good filly, and you just don’t know if you’re good enough,” Arnold said of rival Newspaperofrecord. “Sometimes good is not good enough, but today it was.” The victory was the third in the Edgewood for Arnold, whose previous wins in the race came long ago, with Darien Miss in 1988 and Everhope in 1996. Leparoux had won the race in 2010 with Dynazaper. “My filly was relaxed the whole time, and she made a big run at the end,” Leparoux said. “I rode the race, not paying attention to the one horse. I just wanted to pay attention to my filly.” The winner’s task Friday seem aided by 1-5 public choice Newspaperofrecord running below the untouchable form from her unbeaten juvenile season in her first start at 3. When her rider, Irad Ortiz Jr., asked her to quicken at the top of the stretch, she stayed in an even pace and held second. “She was a little fresh,” Ortiz said. “She was a little more aggressive than I wanted, and she had come from a layoff. She ran good, finished second. She’ll be all right next time.” Newspaperofrecord’s trainer, Chad Brown, questioned whether she was fit enough. “She just ran out of gas the last part of it,” he said. “Hopefully, she gets a lot out of this race. It's unfortunate she's no longer undefeated, but we'll have to go on. We have a really good horse. We'll have to see what we'll do with her next." In taking the Edgewood, Concrete Rose, a daughter of Twirling Candy owned by Ashbrook Farm and BBN Racing, notched the third graded stakes victory of her five-race career. Earlier this year she won the Grade 3 Florida Oaks, and last year at 2 she took the Grade 3 Jessamine at Keeneland. Winter Sunset, third behind Concrete Rose in the Florida Oaks, was again third behind her in the Edgewood. She closed to pass Cambier Parc by a neck for the show, 3 3/4 lengths behind Newspaperofrecord.
