Both literally and figuratively, trainer Bob Baffert has them surrounded in the Grade 2, $200,000 San Vicente Stakes for 3-year-olds on Saturday at Santa Anita. The comebacking Freedom Fighter drew the rail and recent maiden winner Concert Tour drew the outside in the seven-furlong San Vicente, which goes as race 7 on the 10-race card. Six are entered, and the race could scratch down to five, as Mr. Impossible was scheduled to go instead in a maiden race Sunday, trainer Simon Callaghan said Thursday morning. Concert Tour is the obvious favorite based on his dynamic win on debut Jan. 15. Freedom Fighter, one of Baffert’s most highly regarded prospects last summer at Del Mar, is making his first start after being sidelined following a debut win six months ago and also should attract significant support. Their rivals are The Chosen Vron, who was a fast debut winner against California-breds the second day of the meet Dec. 27 for Eric Kruljac but then missed the California Cup Derby last month with a minor illness; Found My Ball, wheeling back two weeks after romping against California-bred maidens in his second start for Doug O’Neill, and Uncle Boogie, who has won twice against lesser for Andrew Lerner and figures to be the race’s longest price. :: Enhance your handicapping with DRF’s Santa Anita Clocker Report Baffert’s barn concentrates on Kentucky Derby prospects, and the strength and depth of his stable has been on display in recent months. If either Concert Tour or Freedom Fighter prevail, that will mark Baffert’s fourth straight graded stakes win for this division on this circuit with his fourth different horse, following Spielberg in the Los Alamitos Futurity, Life Is Good in the Sham, and Medina Spirit in the Robert Lewis. Concert Tour is a serious prospect. Bet to even money in his debut, he came home strongly in the six-furlong race, earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 88 while turning back Mr. Impossible. He came back with a strong final drill Tuesday. He’s by Derby winner Street Sense and out of a mare by Tapit, so he’s just getting warmed up. “I want to give him one more sprint,” Baffert said. “The timing is perfect. Then he’ll have enough foundation to stretch out.” Concert Tour, a homebred for Gary and Mary West, is on the same trajectory as Nadal a year ago. Both debuted in mid-January and came back three weeks later to win the San Vicente. Nadal went on to capture the Rebel Stakes and a division of the Arkansas Derby. Joel Rosario rode Concert Tour in his debut and is back Saturday. Freedom Fighter – like Justify and Authentic in previous years part of the annual contingent of colts sent to Baffert by a partnership that includes Starlight Racing, SF Racing, and Madaket Stables – got a 79 Beyer six months ago. With physical maturity, he figures to be faster now. “Seven-eighths is a tough distance coming back. He’s fast, but he has to work out a trip,” Baffert said.
