Concert Tour, who skipped the Kentucky Derby after a disappointing third-place finish in the Arkansas Derby, will run in the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes on May 15 at Pimlico, setting up a match with stablemate Medina Spirit, the Derby winner, their trainer, Bob Baffert, said Monday afternoon. Mike Smith will ride Concert Tour, both Baffert and Smith’s agent, Brad Pegram, said Tuesday. Smith replaces Joel Rosario, who had ridden Concert Tour in all four of his previous starts. Baffert said Gary West, who along with his wife Mary bred and own Concert Tour, “wants to take a shot.” Baffert said there was no reason not to run, as Concert Tour worked well on Sunday at Churchill Downs. “The horse is doing well,” Baffert said. :: DRF's Preakness Headquarters: Contenders, latest news, past performances, analysis, and more Baffert said Concert Tour would work again Sunday after Baffert returns to Louisville. He is currently overseeing his California-based runners at Santa Anita. Medina Spirit will not have a work in between the Derby and Preakness, but will have a “spirited gallop,” Baffert said, an itinerary he has used with his previous Derby winners who came back two weeks later in the Preakness. Both colts are scheduled to head by van to Baltimore on Monday, Baffert said. Concert Tour, who did not race at 2, won his first three races, including the San Vicente at Santa Anita and the Rebel at Oaklawn, before finishing third as the 1-5 favorite in the Arkansas Derby. Baffert subsequently removed Concert Tour from consideration for the Derby, saying Concert Tour needed more time to recover to be at his best. The Arkansas Derby was three weeks prior to the Derby. Concert Tour will thus race in the Preakness following a five-week break. There is precedent for a trainer running a stablemate against a Derby winner, the most recent example being Baffert. In 2015, Baffert ran Dortmund, the Derby's third-place finisher, against Derby winner American Pharoah in the Preakness. American Pharoah won, and went on to win the Triple Crown. Dortmund finished fourth in the Preakness. :: Join DRF Bets and get ready to watch and wager on the Preakness with a $250 first deposit bonus  In 1995, D. Wayne Lukas won the Derby with Thunder Gulch, but beat Thunder Gulch in the Preakness with stablemate Timber Country, who had finished third in the Derby. Thunder Gulch finished third in the Preakness, then three weeks later won the Belmont. The prospective field for the Preakness stood at 10 as of Tuesday owing to the defections of Essential Quality and King Fury. Trainer Brad Cox told Steve Byk on his Sirius radio show that Essential Quality, fourth as the favorite in the Derby, would bypass the Preakness. Trainer Kenny McPeek has taken King Fury out of consideration, according to report from journalist Jennie Rees. King Fury, the Lexington Stakes winner, was scratched from the Derby after spiking a temperature.
