ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Sofia Vives had an eventful week. It began when she was unseated in the slop on Monday, July 15, at Fort Erie. Unscathed, she came right back to ride the next race there. The award-winning apprentice then had a career day here Saturday when winning both the $503,000 Woodbine Oaks and Grade 2 Connaught Cup. Vives is being reunited with Hunt Master in Thursday’s featured conditioned allowance with a $50,000 claiming option. They teamed for a front-running score over first-level allowance stock in a seven-furlong turf sprint Oct. 22. Hunt Master secured second behind Reload’s Rascal in his June 20 season opener, which was moved from the grass to the Tapeta. Trainer Angus Buntain was satisfied with the 5-year-old’s comeback. “There’s always a concern off a seven-month layoff, how the horse is going to run,” Buntain said. “More concerning to me was that it did come off the turf, because he’s a superior horse on the turf compared to the Tapeta. “He ran what I thought was a really good race. We were thrilled with the result. I can’t help but think that’s going to set him up even better for this race, provided it stays on the turf. I think he’s sitting on a real big effort now. He’s going great.” :: Subscribe to the DRF Post Time Email Newsletter: Get the news you need to play today's races!  Buntain is exited to get the hot Vives back for the six-furlong race. Hunt Master has an appealing outside post in the seven-horse field. “It’s nice to get the five pounds” off, Buntain said. “He doesn’t need to be in front. He can lay off it, and that’s fine. He just needs to be up in the race. He can’t be far back.” Off two excellent races here in the spring, Niagara Skyline could go favored under leading rider Rafael Hernandez. Niagara Skyline finished a close third when coming off the sidelines May 19 in a five-furlong inner-turf dash won by the rapid Silent Reserve. When moving over to the main turf in a seven-furlong tilt at this level June 16, he cut loose on the lead and got nailed on the wire by Capture the Lion, who subsequently ran fourth in the Connaught. One Bay Hemingway is getting a late start to his campaign and should be a speed threat in his first start since scoring with a $50,000 claiming tag Dec. 17. He was disqualified from the purse money when first in the restricted Lake Erie Stakes at Fort Erie in September for carrying the incorrect weight. Both of his turf races in 2022 were good. Cotton won 4 of 8 outings last year and has been freshened since landing a $25,000 conditioned claimer on March 15 at Gulfstream Park. I’m A Gambler was scratched at the gate when scheduled to make his second local start July 12. He rallied for third at this level in his first try for Kevin Attard on June 16. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
