HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Faust, who ran in one of the fastest six-furlong races of the meet in his last start, is back in at the same distance for Friday’s featured ninth race at Oaklawn Park. Faust is one of eight entered in an entry-level allowance for 3-year-olds and up. The race is one of several interesting offerings on the card. There also is a ratings handicap and a pair of starter allowances among the 10 races Friday. In his last race, Faust finished third at this level. The winner of the race, Zero Sugar, covered six furlongs in 1:08.76 and earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 99. Haulin Ice ran six furlongs in a meet-best 1:08.75 in February, according to records from Oaklawn. Zero Sugar was to have run back in a second-level allowance on Thursday. Faust comes into Friday’s ninth race off a Beyer of 92 after finishing 2 3/4 lengths behind Zero Sugar. The figure is a career best for Faust, who will start from post 3. “It looks like a really good spot for him,” trainer Steve Asmussen said. “He needs to reproduce his last race, and his last race, I think, will be good enough.” :: Live racing action at Oaklawn Park! DRF Past Performances and Picks are available now. Erik Asmussen, Faust’s regular rider, will be aboard for Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt. Faust could get a tracking kind of trip off Invictus, who is a son of Kentucky Oaks winner Serengeti Empress. He has speed, will start from the rail, and is a candidate to show the way in a race that does not appear to have much speed. Ramon Vazquez has the mount on Invictus for Joel Politi and Tom Amoss, the respective owner and trainer who raced $2.1 million earner Serengeti Empress. The Friday card opens with an appearance by Filly Crystal, a two-time winner at the meet who leads a $25,000 starter allowance for older fillies and mares at six furlongs. She enters off a runner-up finish to multiple stakes winner Asternia in a ratings handicap at this distance March 6 at Oaklawn. Gloriette is the speed from the rail, while Itzel is a quick Texas-bred who starts from post 5. The third race is a ratings handicap for older fillies and mares over six furlongs. It carries a purse of $47,000. She’s Not a Joke owns the field’s best last-race Beyer, a 74. In the eighth race, a $35,000 starter allowance for 4-year-olds and up at a mile, American Law looks like the one to beat. He was third by three-quarters of a length in the $150,000 Fifth Season Stakes in his most recent start Feb. 5 at Oaklawn. American Law earned a Beyer of 87 in the one-mile Fifth Season. It is the best last-race number in Friday’s eight-horse field. One start prior, American Law won a $25,000 starter allowance going a mile at Oaklawn. Cristian Torres has the mount from post 5 for trainer Sarah Shaffer. ◗ Oaklawn takes entries for the Grade 2, $1 million Fantasy on Friday. The Kentucky Oaks points race will be drawn in a ceremony that will take place between races, according to racing secretary Pat Pope. The Fantasy will be run March 27. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
