Comedy Town earns new top Beyer; will stay in stakes company

Kristina Taylor/Coglianese Photo Comedy Town earned a 100 Beyer Speed Figure for his victory in the Smile Sprint at Gulfstream.

Comedy Town won the Smile Sprint last weekend at Gulfstream with a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 100 and the performance has led to some options for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr.

“He ran big the other day – first time on a fast dirt track,” Joseph said. “He had trained well on a fast track, but then he won in the slop, so you just never knew. To step up against those kind of horses – he rated and then he quickened nicely – it opens up a lot of options, obviously.”

Joseph said at this time of year there might be more options for Comedy Town up north, so he is considering sending the horse to either Saratoga or Monmouth Park.

“We’re going to keep him in stakes company,” he said, with the horse’s next start to be determined.

Beth’s Dream to Sheer Drama

Beth’s Dream, who is unbeaten this year with three wins at Gulfstream, is set to make her next start in the track’s $100,000 Sheer Drama Handicap on Aug. 17, said trainer Victor Barboza Jr.

The seven-furlong race is expected to produce starters for the Princess Rooney in September, and that remains a long-range goal for Beth’s Dream, said Barboza.

Beth’s Dream has won an allowance and a pair of overnight handicaps this year. For her efforts, she’s earned Beyer Speed Figures in the 90s.

Beth’s Dream races for James and Virginia Gamble.

Turf try for Anatomy

Anatomy will make her turf debut in Sunday’s eighth race, a first-level allowance for fillies and mares over five furlongs. She is coming off a fifth-place finish in the Musical Romance at 6 1/2 furlongs on dirt, and prior to that had won on Tapeta.

“I know it’s the first time for her to run on the grass – she likes the Tapeta,” said trainer Jose D’Angelo.

D’Angelo is hoping her good synthetic-track form will translate to the turf, a surface for which she has a 330 Tomlinson Rating.

“She has to track the speed and wait to make her move,” said D’Angelo.
