With comeback win under his belt, Senor Buscador has plenty of options

Senor Buscador wins Curribot Handicap at SUN March 5 2023
Coady Photography In his first start since finishing eighth in the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile, Senor Buscador won the Curribot Handicap at Sunland Park by four lengths.

Senor Buscador emerged from his comeback race in good order and now has several options for his next start, trainer Todd Fincher said Tuesday.

Senor Buscador made his first start since the Breeders’ Cup on March 5, winning the $75,000 Curribot Handicap at Sunland Park. He stalked the pace and cruised home by four lengths, while covering the 1 1/16 miles distance in a strong 1:42.75.

“It was a very nice comeback race for him,” said Fincher.

The race was the first since Nov. 5 for Senor Buscador, who finished eighth in the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Keeneland. He earned a berth into the race for his victory in the Grade 3 Ack Ack one start prior at Churchill Downs.

Fincher said no plans have been set yet for Senor Buscador.

“We’ve got options everywhere,” he said. “There are races all over, pretty much. I think he’ll go seven furlongs to a mile and a quarter.”

Fincher said Oaklawn Park options for Senor Buscador are the Grade 3, $400,000 Oaklawn Mile on April 1 or the Grade 2, $1 million Oaklawn Handicap at 1 1/8 miles April 22.

Fincher said a Churchill Downs option is the Grade 2, $600,000 Alysheba at 1 1/16 miles May 5. Fincher also was looking at options in Southern California.

Sheriff Brown, a multiple stakes winner and half-brother to Senor Buscador, will stay home in New Mexico and target the Sunland Park Handicap, said Fincher.

Slammed back on worktab

Grade 2 winner Slammed has no specific race targeted for her comeback after having her first breeze since the Breeders' Cup on Sunday. She went three-eighths in 37.16 seconds at Sunland Park.

“It was a nice little stroll for her,” Fincher said. “We’re taking our time getting her ready. No target.”

Slammed’s work was her first since finishing 12th in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Following the start she was found to have a foot abscess and she was given time off, said Fincher. Last year, Slammed won the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America at Keeneland.
