Come to Mischief will invade for Del Mar Debutante

DEL MAR, Calif. – Come to Mischief was so sharp winning her debut in the My Dear Stakes at Woodbine in late June that she was the subject of a private acquisition by Loooch Racing after the race.
For her second start, new trainer Peter Walder planned a Grade 1 stakes on Labor Day weekend. The question was: on which coast?
After considering the $350,000 Spinaway Stakes at Saratoga, Walder has brought Come to Mischief to California for the $300,000 Del Mar Debutante next Saturday.
Come to Mischief is expected to be the only out-of-state shipper in the Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs, the top race for 2-year-old fillies at the track’s summer meeting. Come to Mischief won the My Dear Stakes at five furlongs by six lengths for trainer Nicholas Gonzalez and was sent to Walder’s stable at Gulfstream Park after that race.
On Sunday, Come to Mischief, who is by Into Mischief, worked a half-mile from the gate in 51.60 seconds at Del Mar. Walder said he timed the workout in “49 and change.” Regardless of the time, the objective was met, Walder said.
“It was mostly to get accustomed to the track,” Walder said. “The farther she went, the better she went.”
Gary Stevens is booked to ride Come to Mischief, Walder said. The filly is part of a Debutante field led by the unbeaten Pretty N Cool, the winner of the Grade 2 Sorrento Stakes at 6 1/2 furlongs here Aug. 12. Other candidates are Gomo and One True Kiss, second and third in the Sorrento; Stays in Vegas, who won the Wine County Debutante at Santa Rosa; and the maiden winners Mitzi Winks My Dynamo, Songbird, and Surfside Tiara.
Jerry Hollendorfer trains Songbird, Stays in Vegas, and Surfside Tiara. On Sunday, Hollendorfer said he does not have a runner for the $300,000 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs on Labor Day. Hollendorfer does have a promising colt in Who’s Out, the winner of a maiden race Saturday.
Who’s Out, by Tale of Ekati, won a maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs by 7 1/2 lengths in his second start. Co-owned by Hollendofer and M Racing Stable, Who’s Out earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 83. He was fourth in his debut Aug. 2.
“He didn’t run like we thought he would first time out,” Hollendorfer said. “Maybe we didn’t have him as ready as we thought he was. He came through and looks like a prospect.”
While the seven-furlong Del Mar Futurity is too quick for Who’s Out, Hollendorfer said the $300,000 FrontRunner Stakes at 1 1/16 miles Sept. 26 at Santa Anita “is the next logical spot.” He said the $100,000 Contender Stakes for 2-year-olds at a mile Sept. 13 at Los Alamitos is unlikely.
“I think the stakes at Los Alamitos is a little too quick,” Hollendorfer said.
The field for the Del Mar Futurity is led by Nyquist, the unbeaten winner of the Grade 2 Best Pal Stakes on Aug. 8, and Young Brian, the winner of a maiden race by 10 1/4 lengths in his debut Aug. 8. Other candidates are the maiden race winners Blameitonthelaw, Mt Veeder, Rockin Bayou, and Swipe, who was second in the Best Pal Stakes.
