Columbus: Bach’s Homebrew returns from layoff in Amadevil Stakes

Bill Hodtwalker|Aug 15, 2013

Bach’s Homebrew returns to action off a layoff since June 7 as he faces a field of six other Nebraska-breds in the $15,000-added Amadevil Stakes going six furlongs on Saturday evening at Columbus Races.

Bach’s Homebrew is winless in his six starts this year but returns to a track that has favored his late kick in the past, including his victory in this race in 2011. This year, Bach’s Homebrew has been stakes-placed three times, including a runner-up finish to Diamond Joe in the Who Doctor Who Stakes at Horsemen’s Park in May. Diamond Joe is slated to run on Friday night at Canterbury Park in the John Bullit Stakes.

Last year’s Amadevil winner, Buffalo Creek Hawk, trained by Bill Isburg, returns to Nebraska off a win over $15,000 claiming company at Arapahoe Park on June 22. Buffalo Creek Hawk was third in the Who Doctor Who Stakes behind Diamond Joe and Bach’s Homebrew. He made two starts in Colorado, where his latest was his first win of the year.

From the Ashes, second in this race a year ago, dropped to the bottom-level claiming ranks last out where he was a galloping 6 1/4-length winner over $2,500 claimers here on Aug. 2 for trainer David Anderson. He is part of a coupled entry with 3-year-old Diamonds Ace.

◗ Hall of Famer and Columbus native Jack Van Berg will be on hand during the Columbus Days celebration on Saturday. Following a session downtown in the afternoon, Van Berg will be at the track Saturday night beginning at 6 p.m. to sign his book, “From Grit to Glory,” written by fellow Nebraskan Chris Kotulak.

◗ Post time for Saturday, Aug. 31, has been moved up to 2 p.m. to avoid running during the Nebraska Cornhuskers football season opener against Wyoming that evening.
