COLUMBUS, Neb. - Agricultural Park in Columbus opened its 25-day meeting last Friday night with a good crowd of 2,670 fans on hand despite a temperature in the high 80's. The enthusiastic crowd was an 18 percent increase over last year's opening night. Handle on the eight live races was nearly identical to the same night last year.

* Jerry Carkeek scored a four-bagger on Sunday, including the early daily double aboard Spar ($9.80) and 11-year-old Pappy's Double ($7). He picked up another win with Gleefully Proud ($6.60) in the sixth. The featured seventh race was the first leg of the Coors Starter Series at a mile and 70 yards, and Carkeek booted home We Be Spotless ($8) to score by a neck.

* Dean Hansen was selected the Godfather's Pizza trainer of the week with two wins opening weekend. Godfather's Pizza will present a large pizza to the week's winningest trainer over the course of the meeting.
