Colonial Downs in central Virginia will move its Friday card to Monday and begin its Saturday and Sunday cards earlier than planned as a result of the heat wave moving its way eastward across the U.S.
Colonial had eight races scheduled for the Friday card, and all of the races will now be run on Monday. Earlier this week, in anticipation of the heat, Colonial had moved up the first post time for the Friday card to 10:45 a.m.
In addition, Colonial announced that it will start its Saturday and Sunday cards at 10:45 a.m.
Colonial is one of a handful of U.S. tracks that have had to cancel races and reschedule post times due to a heat wave that has caused havoc with the lead-up to the 4th of July weekend throughout the Midwest and on the Eastern seaboard.
According to the national weather service, the high temperature in New Kent is forecast for 101 degrees on Friday, with heath index several degrees higher. The high for Saturday is forecasted for 100 degrees, while Sunday is forecast for 98 degrees.
