Colonial: Little speed in sprint

Joe DeVivo|Jul 01, 2004

Early speed is a rare commodity in the $50,000 Buckland, a 5 1/2-furlong turf stakes for fillies and mares at Colonial Downs. Most of the contenders prefer to either stalk or come from far off the pace.

The prime candidates to steal the Buckland on the front end are Oh Say Vicki and Bright Gold.

Oh Say Vicki, who drew post 13, was close early and finished strong late in a pair of swiftly run stakes, one at Monmouth last summer and the other in her last start at Pimlico, in which the early fractions were 21 seconds and change for a quarter-mile and 43 and change for the first half-mile.

Bright Gold displayed newfound early foot in a restricted stakes two weeks ago and could be difficult to catch at the shorter distance of the Buckland.
