Colonial: Bright Gold much the best

Bright Gold ($5.80) got the jump on heavily favored With Patience and drew off to a 3 1/4-length victory in the $60,000 Somethingroyal Stakes at Colonial Downs.

A 5-year-old mare trained by Mary Eppler and ridden by Horacio Karamanos, Bright Gold was winless in five turf starts until she took last month's Buckland at Colonial. Unlike that 5 1/2-furlong race, where she had to come from far back after being steadied at the three-eighths pole, Bright Gold was only two lengths off the early pace set by Boss Chenin. Bright Gold took command at the top of the stretch and was easily best, covering 5 1/2 furlongs on firm turf in a quick 1:02.22.

With Patience, who won this race last year but is more adept at longer distances, had to settle for second as the 4-5 favorite.
