Collmus to call Del Mar fall meet; Denman injured in fall
Larry Collmus will serve as track announcer at Del Mar for the upcoming autumn meeting, replacing Trevor Denman who recently sustained a back injury in a fall at his Minnesota home, the track said in a statement on Friday.
Denman, 68, suffered a herniated disc when he slipped and fell on outdoor stairs, the track said. Because of the injury, Denman is unable to travel.
Collmus, 55, will call all but three days of the season. He will miss the Nov. 12-14 programs for a previously scheduled vacation and will be replaced on those days by John Lies, who also works as the track’s paddock commentator.
Collmus called races at Del Mar at the summer and fall meetings in 2020, a year Denman took off because of the pandemic.
The autumn meeting begins on Wednesday and runs through Nov. 28. Collmus was already bound for Del Mar on Nov. 5-6 to call the Breeders’ Cup races for NBC.
