Colinda Dawn has experience for George Wafer Memorial
Colinda Dawn checks off the most boxes in the $40,000 George Wafer Memorial, a one-mile race for 3-year-old fillies Sunday at Arapahoe Park. She is proven at two turns, she has won on dirt, and she has been competitive at the stakes level.
The George Wafer’s field of six also includes Stratagem, a stakes winner over males last year at 2, and Smokin Reward, a smart maiden special weight winner last month at The Downs at Albuquerque.
Key contenders
Colinda Dawn (Last 3 Beyers: 66-69-49)
* She is the lone horse in the field with a win at two turns, having captured an optional $20,000 claimer at 7 1/2 furlongs on turf in her last start April 11. The score came at Turf Paradise, where one start prior she was second by a half-length in the $35,000 Scottsdale Handicap at a mile on turf March 14.
* Colinda Dawn also has had success on dirt, winning a maiden special weight by 10 1/4 lengths in October at Albuquerque. The race was run over five furlongs, and she led throughout under regular rider Dennis Collins. Colinda Dawn could show the way or track Stratagem and Smokin Reward.
* Ty Garrett trains Colinda Dawn for Eleanor Martin.
Stratagem (Last 3 Beyers: 55-44-46)
* The winner of the Wyoming Thoroughbred Futurity last July, she will be making her two-turn debut Sunday.
* Stratagem is returning to racing with straight 3-year-olds after finishing fourth against older rivals in the $40,000 Molly Brown at Arapahoe.
