Colebrook makes plans for 2-year-olds

Coady Media Percy’s Bar won her first two races, including a five-length victory in the Ellis Park Debutante.

Percy’s Bar went to Saratoga from her Keeneland base and finished second behind Tommy Jo in the Grade 1 Spinaway on Aug. 30. It was not a close second. More than six lengths separated first and second in the seven-furlong Spinaway.

Percy’s Bar’s trainer, Ben Colebrook, is not exactly looking forward to a rematch with fellow 2-year-old filly Tommy Jo in the Alcibiades Stakes next month at Keeneland, but a change of venue and a move from one to two turns at least gives Colebrook a glimmer of hope.

“We’ve got a home game and last time was an away game. Maybe at two turns we can turn the tables,” Colebrook said.

Percy’s Bar won her first two races, including a five-length victory in the Ellis Park Debutante, before her Grade 1 placing. Colebrook and owner Hat Creek Racing circled the Alcibiades after the Ellis win.

While Percy’s Bar has run well in three starts, the Colebrook-trained 2-year-old colt Street Beast has made a fortune in two starts. On Aug. 28, Street Beast picked up a $150,000 check when he won a Kentucky Downs allowance race restricted to Keeneland sales graduates. And on Sunday, 10 days later, Street Beast romped in the $1 million Juvenile Mile, earning $591,000. There, Street Beast beat suspect competition but won by seven lengths and looked good doing it.

Given the quick turnaound at Kentucky Downs, Colebrook doesn’t want to run in the Bourbon Stakes in October at Keeneland, but he would like to take Street Beast to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
