Cohen family finds winning groove at Golden Gate, Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. - Two consecutive weekends in late April and early May gave the Cohen family a memorable span of wins at Golden Gate Fields and Santa Anita.
On April 30, Evening Sun, co-owned by Jed and Roberta Cohen’s Red Baron’s Barn, and their son Tim’s Rancho Temescal, won the Grade 3 San Francisco Mile at Golden Gate Fields in his stakes debut.
On Friday at Santa Anita, Red Baron’s Barn won three of the first four races, two in partnership with Rancho Temescal. They teamed to win the first race, a maiden special weight race for turf sprinters with Annie’s Song, and the third race, a $25,000 claimer on turf, with Tartini. Both are trained by Mark Glatt.
Red Baron’s Barn won the fourth race, a $20,000 claimer for maidens, with Lil Light Headed, who is co-owned by Alan and Bonnie Cummings and trained by Michael McCarthy.
On Saturday at Santa Anita, Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal won the second race, an allowance race for fillies and mares with the 3-year-old Dance to the Music.

On Sunday, Red Baron’s Barn and Rancho Temescal’s Fast Draw Munnings was third in an allowance race. Fast Draw Munnings, trained by Jeff Mullins, won the California Cup Derby in January.
Tim Cohen said the span of recent wins was unprecedented for the family.
“I’m going to roll in the same dirt and eat the same food,” Cohen said. “I’m real happy for my dad.
“Five wins in eight days - it’s a credit to the horses, the trainers and their grooms. We try to buy the right horses. The trainers and their staffs make it happen.”
Dance to the Music, trained by Glatt, was second in the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante last September. The allowance race was her first start since a sixth in the Grade 2 Chandelier Stakes last October.
Glatt said the Grade 1 Test Stakes for 3-year-old fillies, a $500,000 race at seven furlongs at Saratoga on Aug. 6, could be a long-range goal for Dance to the Music.
“She’s got some work in front of her,” Glatt said. “She could be a Test filly.
“It would be nice to run in some graded stakes for straight 3-year-olds when we can. We’ll have to play it by ear.”
The Cohen family’s next Grade 1 starter will be Evening Sun in the $500,000 Shoemaker Mile on turf at Santa Anita on May 30.
“He’s a true miler,” Tim Cohen said.

Rancho Temescal is located north of Los Angeles, and was recently the temporary home of Dr. Schivel, the star sprinter co-owned by Red Baron’s Barn, Rancho Temescal, Bill Branch and Reeves Thoroughbreds.
Dr. Schivel, who was second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar last November, finished third in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen Sprint in Dubai on March 26, and was given a rest at the ranch when he was shipped back to California.
Last summer, Dr. Schivel won the Grade 1 Bing Crosby Stakes at six furlongs at Del Mar. The same $400,000 race on July 30 is the next goal. Dr. Schivel returned to Glatt’s stable at Santa Anita over the weekend.
“We gave him a month at Tim’s ranch,” Glatt said. “He behaved himself and put on some weight. We’ve got three months to get him ready for the Bing Crosby.”
