SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Code of Honor, winner of the Grade 3 Dwyer Stakes at Belmont on July 6, worked a half-mile in 47.96 seconds over the Oklahoma training track Sunday morning as he continues preparations for the Grade 1 Travers on Aug. 24.
Code of Honor worked outside of 2018 Discovery winner Plainsman, formerly trained by Brad Cox. The pair went their first quarter in 24.00 seconds, final quarter in 23.96, and out five furlongs in 1:01.46.
“It was time to step it up a little bit,” trainer Shug McGaughey said. “We’ll come back and [breeze] him again in about a week and take it from there.”

Bourbon War works on turf
Bourbon War, a disappointment in the final two legs of the Triple Crown, is headed for the turf for his next start. Sunday, at Saratoga, he worked a half-mile over the Oklahoma turf course in 48.07 seconds, going in splits of 23.97 for the first quarter and 24.10 for the second quarter.
“I was happy with that. I thought he went very nice,” trainer Mark Hennig said. “The rider said as soon as he got on it he was wanting to go, which was encouraging.”
Hennig said he would likely give Bourbon War a try in the $100,000 Better Talk Now, a one-mile turf race here on Aug. 25.
Bourbon War, who finished eighth in the Preakness and last of 10 in the Belmont Stakes, is by Tapit out of My Conquestadory, a Grade 2 stakes-winning mare on the turf.
