Code of Honor might return in Iselin at Monmouth

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The multiple Grade 1 winner Code of Honor could make his return to the races in the Grade 3, $250,000 Iselin Stakes on Aug. 21 at Monmouth Park, trainer Shug McGaughey said Wednesday.
Code of Honor, the 2019 Travers and Jockey Club Gold Cup winner, has not raced since he finished fifth in the Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park on Jan 23. He was given time off for bone remodeling issues and he returned to the work tab in June at Niall Brennan’s Farm in Ocala, Fla.
On Wednesday, he had his fourth work since returning to McGaughey, going five furlongs in 1:01.58 over the Oklahoma training track.
The work began at the three-furlong pole and he went to the wire in 37.50 seconds. He then went a quarter past the wire in 24.08 seconds and continued out six furlongs in 1:14.50.
“I got his last eighth in 11 and change,” McGaughey said. “He worked really good.”
McGaughey said the Iselin makes sense because it’s 1 1/16 miles. He does not see any suitable races in Saratoga, noting the Grade 1 Forego at seven furlongs may be the only one for which Code of Honor would be eligible.
McGaughey said the Iselin “is a good place to start.” He said he has lined up Paco Lopez to ride Code of Honor.
