Cobalt Creek overcomes poor start to win Refrigerator Handicap

Mary Rampellini|Oct 08, 2017

Cobalt Creek was up for a neck win over Wild Tycoon on Saturday night in the Grade 1, $75,000 Refrigerator Handicap at Lone Star Park. It was another three-quarters of a length back to the favored Dutcher in third.

The Refrigerator is Lone Star’s premier race for older Quarter Horses.

Cobalt Creek ($17.40) had trouble at the start but overcame it to cover 440 yards on a fast track in 21.59 seconds. Ricky Ramirez was aboard for trainer John Stinebaugh.

“We had a little bit of a rough beginning,” Ramirez said. “He broke decent but got into a little bit of traffic, got bumped around. Once they opened up a lane for him, he came running.”

Cobalt Creek earned $41,250 for the win, his seventh from 27 starts. He has earned $258,303. Cobalt Creek is a son of Walk Thru Fire who races for Vwp Jr. Inc.
