Coast to Coast Pick 5 play for Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024
?q=100)
GP RACE 10: After taking the Grade 3 Lecomte over Two Phil’s at Fair Grounds, INSTANT COFFEE was regarded as a 2023 Kentucky Derby contender before things went awry as the beaten favorite in the Grade 2 Louisiana Derby. He has resurfaced with trainer Brittany Russell, who has won at a 24 percent clip with new acquisitions exiting a six-month-plus layoff during the last five years ($1.20 ROI). First-time gelding BARBER ROAD is another fast-working comebacker who could make some noise. (2)
GP RACE 11: Horse-for-course MARYQUITECONTRARY won the last two runnings of the one-mile Rampart Stakes and might welcome the stretch-out around two turns in this Grade 3 fixture. HONOR D LADY completed her sophomore season in fine form and has been working bullets for accomplished layoff trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. Note that she won her 3-year-old debut here off a long break. SA RACE 5: TAHINI is by the good 13 percent turf route sire American Pharoah and is the first foal from a Grade 3-placed turf expert. She could break through in this experiment under superb grass rider Umberto Rispoli. IMA JOKER brings improving grass form to this event and retains Kazushi Kimura, who has ridden Tahini. KATHYNMARISSA is another daughter of American Pharoah who has competed exclusively on dirt while bred for turf on the dam’s side. (3)
GP RACE 12: PERHAPS TONIGHT scored twice last winter at Gulfstream before a successful stint at Woodbine and is nicely spotted in this starter/optional claimer off a charging third on Tapeta, over which she’s winless. Leading rider Irad Ortiz Jr. has solid numbers for trainer Marty Drexler. IPANEMA PRINCESS would appear to be in peak form after landing a recent $25,000 starter allowance in her third start off the bench. NO VALLA figures to be a speed threat if she gets away alertly. SALS DREAM GIRL could improve second time off the Brittany Russell claim, a 35 percent angle going back five years. (4)

SA RACE 7: Milers shortening up often excel down the hillside turf course – CHARGE FOR GOLD and STAY HOT fit the bill. After getting softened up in a speed duel, Charge the Gold faded to fifth behind victorious Stay Hot in a Grade 3 stakes at Del Mar and went on to run second in the Eddie Logan Stakes at Santa Anita. Stay Hot is 2 for 3 on the grass and has worked regularly for successful layoff trainer Peter Eurton. (2)
THE PLAY: 5, 9 / 2, 6 / 1, 7, 9 / 1, 2, 3, 5 / 3, 7 = $96 ticket
