Co Ferment streaks into Arapahoe Park Classic

Mary Rampellini|Aug 11, 2016
Wally Van wins the 2015 Arapahoe Sprint
Coady Photography Wally Van is looking for his first win of 2016.

Arapahoe Park’s parade of closing weekend stakes starts Saturday with a trio of offerings. The $35,000 Arapahoe Park Classic drew 12 route specialists, led by the win-streaking Co Ferment, while Sandhill Lady will defend her title in the $40,000 Spicy for fillies and mares bred in Colorado.

The nine-race program also includes the $100,000 Mile High Derby for Quarter Horses.

The season will wrap Sunday with the $100,000 Gold Rush Futurity at six furlongs and the $160,000 Mile High Futurity for Quarter Horses.

KEY CONTENDERS

Co Ferment, by Afleet Express
(Last 3 Beyers: 80-79-61)

* Co Ferment will be seeking his fourth straight win when he starts in the Arapahoe Classic, a 1 1/8-mile race for 3-year-olds and up. He built his streak during the course of the local meet, dating back to a conditioned allowance win in July.

* Co Ferment will be moving into the stakes ranks for the first time in his career, earning a shot at such rivals off an eight-length allowance romp Aug. 7 at Arapahoe.

* Co Ferment is out of the Defrere mare Kirsche, who also produced Embellishing, a Grade 3 winner of $233,354.

Wally Van, by Crafty Shaw
(Last 3 Beyers: 56-45-43)

* Wally Van is attempting to win his eighth stakes race in the Arapahoe Classic. He enters off a third-place finish in a local allowance July 16.

* Wally Van has registered 12 of his 13 career wins at Arapahoe.

Cattle Company, by Early Flyer
(Last 3 Beyers: 67-66-53)

* Cattle Company darted home by 3 1/4 lengths in the $35,000 Colorado Derby in his last start July 17.

* His ability to be closer to the pace than most of his rivals might give him a tactical advantage.
