Coulterberry paid $13.70 for his one-length victory over Driller in the 6 1/2-furlong dash for 3-year-olds and up. Five Start General, the odds-on favorite, finished third.
Ridden by Amadeo Perez. Coulterberry trailed the field early, moved into contention approaching the stretch turn, and took control when they straightened out for the drive. Driller tracked Pan Handle and Five Star General into the backstretch, battled for the lead with Five Star General at the half-mile mark, and held on to edge the favorite by a neck. Five Star General broke alertly, vied for lead from inside of Pan Handle entering the backstretch, but came up empty late.
The final time over a track rated wet-fast was 1:16.80.
Coulterberry races for Roy and Dixie Jacobson, who bred the 7-year-old son of Finality. It was his second stakes win and brought his record to 11-5-3 from 26 starts for earnings of $228,663.
