Closing night features four consecutive stakes
Famous Chief will attempt to win his second stakes race of the Lone Star Park meet on Saturday night, when he takes on a competitive field of fellow Texas-breds in the $50,000 B.F. Phillips Jr.
The 400-yard race for 3-year-olds and up is one of four stakes on the final night of the Quarter Horse meet at Lone Star. The races are worth a cumulative $237,290. The stakes are slotted as the last four races on a 12-race program that begins at 6:05 p.m. Central.
Famous Chief won the Grade 2 Dash for Cash Futurity in October at Lone Star Park. He broke on top and set the pace, beating Won Famous Dash by three-quarters of a length. Famous Chief will start from the rail Saturday in a field of 12.
Won Famous Dash also returns for the B.F. Phillips Jr. Earlier this year, he won the Grade 2 TQHA Classic Derby at Sam Houston Race Park. The field for the B.F. Phillips Jr. includes an additional quality 3-year-old in Relentlessly, who in May won the Grade 2 Heritage Place Derby at Remington Park.
The stakes action starts with the $50,000 Yellow Rose of Texas that pits win machine Ss Classyjess against the Grade 1-placed Tempting Knockout. The 400-yard stakes is for fillies and mares bred in Texas.
From there, Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds clash at 870 yards in the $58,220 Battle of the Breeds. Don’t Blame Dexter and Slp Mighty High appear to be the chief contenders in a field that includes the Karl Broberg-trained mare Red Red Wine.
Cheyennenews brings the fastest qualifying time into the $79,070 Texas Hero Futurity.
Evangeline Downs
The stakes winners San Lorenzeaux and Blood Money will break on opposite ends of the starting gate Saturday night when they start as the top two choices in the $1 million LQHBA Louisiana Million Futurity at Evangeline Downs.
The 400-yard race for 2-year-olds bred in Louisiana is being showcased on a card of four stakes.
San Lorenzeaux will break from the rail after winning his trial for the Louisiana Million by 1 3/4 lengths Nov. 26 at Evangeline. He ran 400 yards in 19.65 seconds to post the second fastest qualifying time.
Blood Money, who will break from post 10, set the fastest qualifying time for the Louisiana Million when he won his trial in 19.63 seconds. Blood Money will be looking for the third stakes win of his career Saturday. He brings a 6-for-7 record into the Louisiana Million.
San Lorenzeaux is 4 for 6 in his career, with his stakes win coming in the LQHBA Sale Futurity on Oct. 30 at Evangeline Downs. He is 3 for 3 over the local strip in Opelousas, La.
Blood Money has lost once at Evangeline, when finishing second in the LQHBA Sale Futurity.
The card Saturday night includes the $216,594 LQHBA Derby, which drew fastest qualifier El Camino Cl.
The LQHBA will give away five college scholarships worth $2,000 each during drawings at the races Saturday. First post is 5:35 p.m. Central.
