Closing day for Aqueduct’s inner track Saturday
The inner-track season comes to an end with a rare non-stakes Saturday card at Aqueduct. Wednesday racing returns to the New York calendar next week when the main track opens.
This was supposed to be a dark week in New York when 2015 race dates were originally allocated. The March 26-28 cards were added to make up for some of the winter cancellations.
The top race Saturday is a first-level allowance for New York-breds at six furlongs. My Won Love, a $20,000 claim by trainer Steve Klesaris in November, has been knocking on the door in her last two starts and looks ready for an allowance win.
Two starts back, My Won Love finished third behind Town Kitty and Jazzminegem after setting the pace. Town Kitty came back to win a second-level optional-claiming race in her next start. Jazzminegem returned to defeat My Won Love at this level. It was more than 14 lengths back to the third-place finisher.
Another likely winner on the card is Organic Gemini in race 6, a New York-bred maiden sprint. Organic Gemini, trained by Steve Asmussen, was second-best behind Final Chapter two races back. Final Chapter has since won a first-level statebred allowance by six lengths.
In her most recent race, Organic Gemini made up six lengths in the final furlong on the front-running Possessed but was beaten a nose. It was more than a dozen lengths back to the third-place finisher that day. Possessed finished third in the Jimmy Winkfield Stakes at Aqueduct on March 8.
The card starts with an open maiden race at six furlongs. The horse to beat is Avalanche Girl, who finished second for trainer Chad Brown in her debut, a Feb. 1 maiden race at Gulfstream Park.
Brown also has a first-time starter in the six-horse field. By Empire Maker, Planar is out of Beau Watch, who won three minor stakes, two at Prairie Meadows and one at Kentucky Downs.
Kiaran McLaughlin has a Godolphin-owned first-timer by Hard Spun in the race. Revolve has 16 works at the Greentree Training Center, Saratoga, and Belmont Park dating back to September. Revolve is out of the unraced Street Cry mare Arranged.
Jose Ortiz, Jacobson have titles wrapped up
The jockey and trainer standings at the inner-track meet, which began Dec. 3, are pretty clear-cut.
Coming into Thursday’s card, Jose Ortiz led his brother Irad, 76-66. Manuel Franco was third with 52 wins.
As of Thursday morning, David Jacobson led Linda Rice in the trainer standings by both wins, 37-24, and purse earnings, $1.4 million to $1.1 million.
Gary Gullo had a very nice winter, going 21 for 74 (28 percent), and was third in the standings.
Todd Pletcher and his New York assistant, Byron Hughes, also did well on the inner track, winning 17 of 63 starts (27 percent), including four stakes.
