SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Tonalist will go down as one of the best horses Christophe Clement trained. He won the 2014 Belmont Stakes in his fifth career start and would go on to win back-to-back runnings of the Jockey Club Gold Cup as well as a Cigar Mile. Physically, Clement sees a lot of Tonalist in his son Drake’s Passage, a New York-bred who makes his fifth career start and first in a stakes in Sunday’s $250,000 Albany, one of six stakes on an 11-race Saratoga card consisting entirely of races restricted to New York-breds. The Albany, restricted to 3-year-olds, is run at 1 1/8 miles. This will be Drake’s Passage’s first attempt at that distance. He is coming off a one-mile allowance victory on July 3 at Belmont Park, his first start off a seven-month layoff. Clement said Drake’s Passage came back a bit sore from a one-mile maiden win at Aqueduct in the mud last December. “We gave him plenty of time, he’s done great this year,” Clement said. “He’s a really nice horse, he’s trained very well.” Drake’s Passage is owned and bred by Robert S. Evans, who owned Tonalist. “Physically, he’s the closest we’ve trained to Tonalist,” Clement said. “He looks like Tonalist, he’s built like Tonalist, he has the same markings as Tonalist. Unfortunately, I don’t know if he’s as good as Tonalist.” :: DRF's 2023 Saratoga headquarters: Previews, past performances, picks, recaps, news, and more. Mariachi, like Drake’s Passage, is coming into the Albany off an allowance win. That race, his second this year, was at six furlongs. Now, he must stretch out to 1 1/8 miles, though trainer John Kimmel believes that’s doable. “I’m pretty optimistic about it,” said Kimmel, who trains the son of Maclean’s Music for owners/breeders Chester and Mary Broman. “The horse ran seven-eighths first time off the shelf, finished up pretty well considering he was a little short. He’s been really good in his breezes, I think he’s got the ability to stretch out.” Allure of Money and Maker’s Candy finished one-two in the New York Derby going 1 1/16 miles on July 17 at Finger Lakes. Maker’s Candy stumbled out of the gate, raced three wide throughout, and was repelled in the stretch by Allure of Money. Maker’s Candy, trained by Mike Maker, won the seven-furlong Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont in May and had finished first in the Gander at Aqueduct in February, but was disqualified for interference. Allure of Money, trained by Michael Ferraro, has won 4 of 6 starts, all at Finger Lakes. Leo and Royal, Miracle Mike, and Jackson Heights complete the field. Rice pair tops Fleet Indian About the only thing trainer Linda Rice hasn’t done this summer at Saratoga is win a stakes race. That could change Sunday when Rice sends out the uncoupled pair of Amanda’s Folly and Ichiban in the $200,000 Fleet Indian Stakes for New York-bred 3-year-old filles. The Fleet Indian, at 1 1/8 miles, drew only a field of five, including the maiden Krystalheir. Rice entered Friday’s 32nd card of the 40-day meet with 25 wins from 105 starters, only four wins behind Chad Brown. Rice has gone 0 for 6 in stakes. Amanda’s Folly and Ichiban are both coming off statebred allowance wins here going 1 1/8 miles on July 26. Amanda’s Folly won a second-level allowance in front-running fashion, while Ichiban won a first-level allowance from off the pace. “I think Amanda’s Folly relishes the mile and an eighth, the further the better for her,” Rice said. “The other filly may have looked like she’s taken a step back [speed-figure wise] at a mile and an eighth, but she’s done nothing but improve week to week and I’m excited about giving her another try at a mile and an eighth.” Rice said Amanda’s Folly, since she drew the rail, would likely use front-running tactics similar to her last two races. Ichiban, who is drawn in post 5, will likely come from off the pace. :: Visit the Saratoga Handicapping Store for Past Performances, Clocker Reports, Picks, Betting Strategies, and more. Trainer Mark Hennig is enjoying a sensational meet with eight wins from 33 starters. One of those winners was Timely Conquest, who won a first-level statebred allowance by seven lengths going seven furlongs here Aug. 11. “I’m not a fan of running back that quick, stretching from seven to a mile and an eighth, but it’s a pretty moderate field and she really came out of the race sharp and good,” Hennig said. Cairo Sugar, who scored a 27-1 upset in the Maddie May Stakes for New York-breds at Aqueduct in February, completes the field. She is coming off an open second-level allowance victory at Parx Racing going a mile and 70 yards on July 24. With only five runners, the Fleet Indian is carded as race 2. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
