OZONE PARK, N.Y. – A total of 16 3-year-old fillies were entered Monday for Friday’s $135,000 Winter Memories Stakes scheduled for one mile over Aqueduct’s turf.
The field drew 14 runners for turf, plus two horses who would run only if the race is run on the main track. The field will be limited to 10 starters on turf.
Trainer Chad Brown entered a quartet of runners, with three – stakes winner Liguria and stakes-placed runners Tax Implications and Lady Beth – making the body of the race. Get Your Kicks is four deep on the also-eligible list.
Trainer Christophe Clement entered two runners, with the New York-bred Silver Skillet making the body of the field. Plentitude is two deep on the also-eligible list. Clement had said Sunday he was planning to enter Breath Away, the Sanibel Island Stakes winner, but ultimately did not.
Others who made the body of the race include Bolivie, winner of the Searching Stakes at Laurel for trainer Brendan Walsh; Neecie Marie, a Pennsylvania-bred stakes winner trained by Butch Reid; Sacred Wish, runner-up in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks who would be making her turf debut in this spot; Sweetlou’sgotaces, now in the barn of Graham Motion; and the Todd Pletcher-trained pair of Soviet Excess and Junipermarshmallow.
Lifelovenlaughter and Stephanie’s Charm are first and third on the also-eligible list. Balpool and Ichiban are entered in case the race is transferred to the main track.
Deterministic sidelined
The 2-year-old colt Deterministic, who overcame a slow start and wide trip to win his debut last month at Saratoga, had an ankle chip removed recently and will be pointed to a 3-year-old campaign, Clement said.
“I’m sure he’s a nice horse, I can’t say more than that,” Clement said. “Just have to give the time and bring him back.”
Deterministic, a son of Liam’s Map, was next to last in a seven-horse field, had to swing widest of all in the lane, and, despite lugging in, ran down a seemingly home-free Hurricane Nelson to win by a half-length.
Deterministic, who sold for $625,000 at last year’s Keeneland September yearling auction, is owned by St. Elias Stable, Ken Langone, Steve Duncker, and Vicarage Stable.
