On this Halloween weekend, handicappers at Belmont Park on Sunday might experience an eerie sense of déjà vu when it comes to Classic Point, who shoots for her second straight win in the Pumpkin Pie Stakes for fillies and mares at six furlongs. The $100,000 Pumpkin Pie is the seventh of nine races on the getaway-day program. Since it is the final day of the meet, the pick six will be paid out even if there aren’t any perfect tickets. The Aqueduct meet opens on Wednesday with two graded stakes: the Grade 2 Nashua and the Grade 3 Tempted. :: Bet the Pumpkin Pie Stakes with DRF Bets and get FREE access to this article and all of DRF Plus, including Belmont Park selections, video, and real-time analysis. In September, Classic Point returned from a layoff in the Gallant Bloom Handicap and finished evenly to wind up fifth – just as she did last year before adding blinkers and reeling off victories in the Pumpkin Pie, the Grade 3 Go for Wand, and the Grade 2 Inside Information. “I don’t know if it was just the blinkers,” said trainer Jimmy Jerkens. “I think it’s usually a combination of things that makes them win.” Classic Point was never headed in last year’s Pumpkin Pie, which was run at seven furlongs, but then took the Go for Wand and Inside Information as a stalker. Those tactics might be her best option Sunday as she breaks from the rail inside Lady Sabelia and R Free Roll, who have each won Grade 2 sprints in front-running fashion. Lady Sabelia wired the Barbara Fritchie Handicap last winter and makes her first appearance since May. Trainer Robin Graham had originally intended to run her in the Roamin Rachel at Parx Racing on Oct. 3. Those plans were scrapped by a quarantine that went into effect at Parx the day before. Lady Sabelia also has been versatile enough to win stakes from just off the pace, and she has trained forwardly at Laurel for her return. “Whatever you ask her to do, she does,” said Graham. “I never have to give the jockey instructions. If there is speed, she can wait, and if there is not, she can go.” There will be speed from R Free Roll, who outbroke La Verdad and never looked back to win the 2014 Honorable Miss in her only start on the New York circuit. She is back from Florida and has had three local works since rejoining Danny Gargan’s stable. Adding even more speed to the mix is Hey Kiddo, a Parx-based filly who has won 3 of 4 since joining trainer Ramon Preciado. Tea Time, who won the Sharp Cat overnight stakes as a 2-year-old at Belmont, figures to be closing late. Eloquent Tribute, Medaglia d’Argento, and Shogun Samurai round out the field.
