Classic Fool stuns field in Governor's Handicap

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Classic Fool ($84.80), a maiden with only two seconds and two thirds in 19 starts, stunned five rivals, including 1-2 favorite Cappuchino and Metatron, uncoupled stablemates both of whom had placed in graded stakes, to win the $60,600 Governor's Handicap at the California State Fair on Saturday.

Classic Fool, bred, owned and trained by Thomas Stewart, was fifth through the opening half mile of the 1 1/8-mile race, while saving ground. He began to cut into pacesetting Cappuchino's lead on the turn and heading into the stretch.

When Ulterior Motives made a strong move to pass Cappuchino in the lane, Classic Fool followed, then angled out to defeat Ulterior Motives by one-half length in 1:51.60 with Cappuchino finishing third.

The victory was worth $33,100, lifting Classic Fool's lifetime earnings to $74,982.
