OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Before heading to Louisville to oversee the preparations of his Kentucky Derby trio of Forte, Kingsbarns and Tapit Trice, trainer Todd Pletcher made a pit stop in New York to check on his Belmont Park string. Among the group based at Belmont is Classic Catch, who finished fifth in the Grade 2 Wood Memorial, the only horse in the 12-horse field to close significant ground. Classic Catch, a son of Classic Empire, will point to the Grade 3, $200,000 Peter Pan at Belmont on May 13 as a potential steppingstone to the Belmont Stakes on June 10. “He ran sneaky good,” Pletcher said of the horse’s performance in the Wood. “He ran the best last quarter, he just had too much to do.” Classic Catch had won two of four starts prior to the Wood, both wins coming at the Peter Pan distance of 1 1/8 miles. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Meanwhile, Pletcher said Dreamlike and Crupi, third and ninth, respectively, in the Wood, would be freshened up and will point to maiden races at the Belmont Park spring/summer meet that begins May 4. On Sunday, Florida Derby winner Forte and Louisiana Derby winner Kingsbarns left Palm Beach Downs by van and were headed to Churchill to prepare for the Kentucky Derby. Pletcher said that Tapit Trice, the Blue Grass Stakes winner, also vanned over to Churchill from Keeneland on Sunday. Two horses that Pletcher plans to run at Churchill during Derby week stayed in Florida to continue their preparations. One is Munny’s Gold, the speedy undefeated filly who is pointing to the Eight Belles Stakes on May 5. “She’s pretty aggressive to train, she’ll appreciate the quiet track at Palm Beach Downs,” Pletcher said. Steady On, who won the Appleton at Gulfstream Park, is pointing to the Opening Verse Stakes at Churchill on May 4. He will have one more work at Palm Beach Downs before shipping to Kentucky, Pletcher said. Gambling Girl, who finished second in the Grade 3 Gazelle at Aqueduct on April 8, left New York on Sunday for Churchill Downs, where she will prepare for the $1.25 million Kentucky Oaks on May 5. Pletcher has not finalized a rider assignment just yet. Pletcher also mentioned that Falconet, who won the Top Flight Invitational at Aqueduct on April 2, will make her next start in the $100,000 Allaire DuPont at Pimlico on May 19. That race is run at 1 1/8 miles around two turns, a distance and configuration at which Falconet won the Top Flight and the Ladies Stakes earlier this year. Wudda U Think Now, 6, died of colic Wudda U Think Now, a four-time stakes-winning New York-bred gelding, died several weeks ago due to complications from colic, trainer Rudy Rodriguez confirmed. He was 6. Rodriguez said the horse developed colic about 10 days after he finished fourth in the Haynesfield Stakes at Aqueduct on Feb. 20. Rodriguez said Wudda U Think Now was shipped to New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa., when he first developed colic and a few days later he began to founder, which led to his being euthanized. “It was very, very hard for the whole barn,” said Rodriguez, who trained Wudda U Think Now for owner Stuart Grant. “He was a nice-looking horse who always tried. [Grant] already had a home for him if he was going to be retired.” Wudda U Think Now, by Fast Anna, won three stakes in 2022 including the Hollie Hughes, John Morrissey and Alex M. Robb. He began this year with a victory in the Say Florida Sandy Stakes in January before his fourth in the Haynesfield. Wudda U Think Now had a career record of 9-4-2- from 21 starts and earned $564,750. Davis, J. Ortiz suspended Jockeys Dylan Davis and Jose Ortiz have each received suspensions from the New York stewards. Davis was suspended three days for his ride aboard Midnight Rosie, who crossed the wire first in the first race on April 6. Midnight Rosie came in under right-handed urging from Davis and bumped with K D Kakes, which resulted in Midnight Rose being disqualified from first and placed second behind K D Kakes. Davis has appealed the suspension. Ortiz received a one-day suspension for hitting Expressman seven times, one more than allowed, in the Grade 1 Carter on April 8, a race in which Expressman finished third. Ortiz, who also was fined $250, will serve his one-day penalty on Thursday. Speaking of jockeys, Junior Alvarado and Javier Castellano returned to New York on Sunday and are planning to remain here full time after spending the winter at Gulfstream and a few days at Keeneland. Alvarado does have a mount in the Kentucky Derby on Rocket Can while Castellano is hopeful of picking up a mount for that race as well. Castellano rode Cyclone Mischief to a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Florida Derby, but that horse needs three defections to get into the Derby field. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
