The richest purse on Friday’s Churchill Downs card is a $141,000 allowance-optional claiming race for fillies and mares. Several dropping out of stakes company make the one-turn, 7 1/2-furlong dirt race a rich affair in class, as well. Among those is Pigalle, who makes her 2025 debut having already proven she can run well while fresh for trainer Tom Drury Jr. She was an allowance winner at a one-turn mile at Churchill in her 2024 debut that May off a six-month break, dueling and holding on to the lead. She made her next start that August and showed a different dimension, coming from seventh to win the one-mile Groupie Doll at Ellis Park. Pigalle was bested in two graded tries at Churchill to end the season, finishing fourth in the Grade 3 Locust Grove and sixth in the Grade 3 Chilukki. The Chilukki was won by Two Sharp, who recently returned to the races in fine fashion, taking the Grade 3 Winning Colors. This race – a third-level allowance for fillies and mares – has also attracted Harbor Springs, who was beaten just two lengths while third in the Roxelana on opening night of this meet after being bumped at the start, and Oaklawn stakes winner Lady Moscato, who was fourth in that race. Caldwell Luvs Gold, a stakes winner against New York-breds and Grade 3-placed routing on turf, is coming off a seven-furlong allowance win early this month at Aqueduct. :: Access the most trusted data and information in horse racing! Friday’s card also includes a $127,000 one-mile turf allowance for fillies and mares and a $120,000 maiden special for juveniles. ◗ Chunk of Gold, who finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby, is targeting the Grade 3, $500,000 Ohio Derby on June 21 at Thistledown, trainer Ethan West said. Chunk of Gold, a $2,500 yearling, was runner-up in the Grade 2 Risen Star and Grade 2 Louisiana Derby, and has earned $348,818. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering?
