Class drop makes Miss Dynamic speed of the speed
Miss Dynamic will drop from stakes competition into the allowance ranks for Saturday’s six-furlong feature at Emerald Downs.
A daughter of Dynamic Impact, Miss Dynamic figures to be the quickest from the gate and for a change won’t have to chase Aloha Breeze, the best 3-year-old filly on the grounds. Aloha Breeze has won both stakes run for the division here this meet. In both races, Miss Dynamic took the role of chasing Aloha Breeze through lively early splits, an assignment that took its toll on Miss Dynamic in the Kent Stakes two weeks ago.
In the July 16 Kent Stakes, Miss Dynamic veered out and was bumped at the start before chasing her nemesis through an opening quarter timed in 21.82 seconds. Soon after that, Miss Dynamic began to fade, eventually finishing sixth, beaten 34 1/2 lengths.
The Rigoberto Velasquez trainee is plenty fast, and she is the only filly to have topped Aloha Breeze at Emerald Downs, having won last year’s Angie C. Stakes. Saturday’s race affords Miss Dynamic a chance to get her confidence back in a race where she should be able to get the early lead.
Chief among the competition is Blaine Wright-trained Nana’s Angels, who will be racing for the first time since September. Nana’s Angels, a 4-year-old, is the only runner in the field older than 3. In 2022, Nana’s Angels raced five times, winning once and finishing second in her other starts.
“Nana’s Angels is ready to run,” Wright said, adding that the “one hole is a tough post to win from.”
Nana’s Angels has been on the grounds since May or before and on July 2 drilled five furlongs in 59 seconds from the gate, the best of 13 works at the distance that morning. A week later, she sped the same distance in 1:00.20, the second-fastest work of the day.
With Miss Dynamic and Nana’s Angels likely to provide plenty of pace, stalker/closers like Yogya, trained by Tom Wenzel, and Shelby Gold, trained by Frank Lucarelli, should find plenty of speed to chase.
Shelby Gold finished third to Aloha Breeze in an allowance race on May 13 and has since won a $25,000 claiming event. The daughter of Harbor the Gold is somewhat versatile and seems comfortable racing head to head for the lead or from just off the pace.
Yogya won a maiden race June 16 and then gained the important experience of her first race against other winners when she finished second four weeks ago in allowance company. The daughter of Palace Malice has improving Beyer Speed Figures and will be making her fourth start of the season.
Three others in the field are Driveway, trained by Jose Navarro; Rainbow Stew, trained by Joe Toye; and Ms Flashy Harbor, trained by Steve Bullock.
The Saturday card gets under way at 5 p.m. Pacific.
