Grade 1-winning multimillionaires Clairiere and Pauline's Pearl, both homebreds for Barbara Banke's Stonestreet Farm, have arrived back at their birthplace to join the Kentucky broodmare band. Stonestreet made the announcement Wednesday on its social media channels, and said plans for their first matings are still to be determined.
Both 5-year-old mares were trained by Steve Asmussen.
Clairiere retires with eight wins from 22 starts and earnings of $3,266,392. She owns Grade 1 wins in the 2021 Cotillion Stakes as a 3-year-old; the Ogden Phipps last year; and this year's Apple Blossom Handicap, as well as a repeat in the Phipps. She won or placed in 11 other graded stakes, and twice suffered brutally close losses in the Breeders' Cup Distaff, beaten about a length when fourth in 2021 at Del Mar, and beaten a pair of noses when third at Keeneland last year.
Pauline's Pearl concludes her career 8-for-20 with a bankroll of $2,146,800. Her six graded stakes victories were highlighted by a triumph in the Grade 1 La Troienne in 2022 at Churchill Downs. She placed in five other graded stakes.
Clairiere, by Curlin, and Pauline's Pearl, by Tapit, are both out of Grade 1 winners for the Stonestreet operation. Clairiere is out of Cavorting, while Pauline's Pearl is out of one of Banke's foundation mares, Hot Dixie Chick.
