Ciuri just holds on in Lady Angela Stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The speedy Ciuri made all the running in Friday’s $100,000 Lady Angela Stakes, while barely holding off the favored Sav in the seven-furlong sprint at Woodbine.
Ciuri ($5.80) set moderate fractions under Eurico Da Silva, with a hard-ridden Sav in close proximity. Sav took dead aim at Ciuri through the stretch, but Ciuri held her at bay to prevail by a neck in a time of 1:23.42.
Brookies Bear finished third. She was followed by Pink Scribbles and Miss Ariel.
“She ran a very relaxed race,” Da Silva said. “She handled seven-eighths. Seven and one yard, I don’t know.”
Ciuri became the latest stakes winner for the hot young Ontario sire Souper Speedy, and she’s a half-sister to the Grade 2-winning millionaire Something Extra. Trained by Robert Tiller, she earned $60,000 for Entourage Stable.
“She’s a real trier,” Tiller said. “She’s got some heart. She’s a half-sister to a pretty good horse, and this added to her value.”
