Cicada draws field of six; Correction fails to fill

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – It’s already been a good winter for David Lyon’s Blue Lion Thoroughbreds, having won two stakes with the promising 3-year-old colt Morello. That outfit will seek another stakes victory Saturday with Monshun in the $100,000 Cicada Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
Monshun, a daughter of Unified, was a debut winner last Aug. 18 at Saratoga, but was sidelined due to a chip in an ankle that needed to be surgically removed. Trainer Ray Handal was hoping to bring Monshun back in an allowance race, but it didn’t fill.
The Cicada, run at six furlongs, drew a field of six, including Rosebug, fourth in the Busanda at 1 1/8 miles; Lady Scarlet, an allowance winner at Oaklawn on Feb. 26; Lady Milagro, a starter-allowance winner on Feb. 23; and recent maiden winners Exxaltress and Sweet Solare.

Meanwhile, the $100,000 Correction Stakes, which was lost last week when Saturday’s card was canceled due to weather, did not have enough entries this week to fill and won’t be run in 2022. Club Car, who had shipped here from Kentucky, shipped back home and was entered in the $100,000 The Queen Stakes on Saturday at Turfway Park.
