Churchill to unveil 'Peb' mural

David McDonough|Apr 08, 2005

In time for its April 30 opening day, Churchill Downs will unveil a mural depicting every winning jockey from 130 years of Kentucky Derby history. The mural is the work of Pierre "Peb" Bellocq, art director of Daily Racing Form.

The mural portrays the 96 jockeys who have been Kentucky Derby winners, from Oliver Lewis, who rode Aristides to victory in 1875, to Stewart Elliott, who was aboard Smarty Jones last year.

Five feet high and 36 feet long, the mural is mounted on the second-floor wall of the track's new clubhouse, part of Churchill's ongoing $121 million renovation project.

On Saturday, May 21, Churchill will give away poster-size reproductions of the mural in a promotional effort.
