Churchill gets $1M policy

Churchill Downs Inc. has purchased an insurance policy covering jockeys at its Fair Ground racetrack in New Orleans for up to $1 million in medical expenses, the company announced on Friday.

The policy is the first purchased by Churchill that increases coverage for jockeys from the present level of $100,000 in medical bills. In addition to Fair Grounds, Churchill owns six other racetracks, none of which is currently running live. Churchill officials said they are still in negotiations to secure policies for those tracks.

Churchill officials said they are still in discussions with trainers and jockeys at the track over how those groups might also contribute to the funding.

The policy is being provided by AIG. Several other racetracks, including Turfway Park and Keeneland in Kentucky, have purchased similar policies through AIG.
