HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Horsepower. Robert and Lawana Low have got it – whether it’s the couple’s trucking company or their undefeated Kentucky Derby hopeful Magnum Moon. Churchill Downs is the next stop for Magnum Moon after he ran his record to 4 for 4 with his Saturday win in the Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby. The horse was bright and alert Sunday morning at Oaklawn, where he rolled out of the stable area just after 6:30 a.m. to catch a flight to Florida. Trainer Todd Pletcher said later Sunday that Magnum Moon had returned safely to Palm Beach Downs. He said plans are to ship to Churchill on April 23 to continue preparations for the Kentucky Derby. Luis Saez, who has ridden the horse in each of his starts, has the mount, Pletcher said. The Lows are thrilled to be headed back to the Kentucky Derby after running third in the 2006 classic with Steppenwolfer. They also were elated with Magnum Moon’s win in the Arkansas Derby. It was the richest victory for the couple on paper, but the meaning was much deeper. The Lows are residents of Springfield, Mo., and consider Oaklawn their home track. Earlier this meet, Magnum Moon won the track’s Grade 2, $900,000 Rebel. “My dad brought me down here when I was very young,” said Robert Low, 68. “It’s very gratifying to win this race. We’d love to win the Kentucky Derby, of course. That’s the ultimate. To win the Arkansas Derby is really, really special. We’re so excited.” Magnum Moon turned in a dominant performance in his final Kentucky Derby prep Saturday, as he seized command of the Arkansas Derby from the start and never relinquished his lead. In the stretch, Magnum Moon separated himself from his rivals for a four-length victory over Quip. Magnum Moon earned a career-high Beyer Speed Figure of 98 and leads his peers in Kentucky Derby points with 150. “Steppenwolfer was a deep closer and this horse, Magnum Moon, he can be up there,” Low said. “He showed a lot of flexibility. He can be on the lead. “When he came home like he did, that was special.” Magnum Moon was a $380,000 yearling purchase at the Keeneland September sale in 2016. Low said the horse was selected by Jacob West, who is the bloodstock agent and racing manager for the Lows. “Jacob is one of those guys that has a talent,” Low said. “He can look at a horse in the paddock and pick out an athlete. That’s a really special talent.” Robert Low said Magnum Moon’s pedigree also was a draw.  “We looked at his pedigree – we thought maybe he can go on to be a stallion,” Low said. “He’s by Malibu Moon out of an unraced Unbridled’s Song mare – a really nice Unbridled’s Song mare. She sold for $825,000 [as a yearling]. We liked Unbridled’s Song as a broodmare sire.” Magnum Moon won his career debut in January, and has not lost since, accounting for a Tampa allowance win in February, followed by the Rebel in March and his best race yet in the Arkansas Derby. “The Lows are terrific people to train for," Pletcher said, "and like us, they’re very excited for Magnum Moon.” Quip, who has 90 Kentucky Derby points, was to ship Sunday night to the Keeneland base of his trainer, Rodolphe Brisset. The horse will move next weekend to Churchill Downs, where the stable has 10 stalls. Quip was always prominent in the Arkansas Derby and his effort will send him to the Kentucky Derby.  “As I said earlier in the week, if we run one-two-three, it would be a good race, it would mean we belong in there,” Brisset said. “After the outcome of the race … I guess we ran second from a horse who should be first or second choice in the Derby. “I’m happy for [Quip]. We can look to the next one now.”  Florent Geroux, who is a longtime friend of Brisset’s and a fellow native of France, has the mount in the Kentucky Derby. Quip was ridden in the Arkansas Derby by Geroux. “He really, really dug in from the eighth pole to the wire, and Florent mentioned he galloped out very nicely after the wire,” Brisset said. Solomini fought for third in the Arkansas Derby and now has 54 Kentucky Derby points. Trainer Bob Baffert said the horse is scheduled to fly back to California on Monday. Solomini will travel to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby either a week out from the race, or five days out, Baffert said Sunday. "I'm booked on all the flights," he said. "I just haven’t decided yet.” Combatant, who finished fourth in the Arkansas Derby, ranks 21st on the points leaderboard with 32. “He came out of the race in real good shape,” trainer Steve Asmussen said Sunday. Asmussen said the horse would ship to Churchill this week with other members of his Oaklawn division. He said plans are to be determined for Combatant, who earlier in the meet ran second in the Grade 3 Southwest and third in the Grade 2 Rebel. “When we get back to the track, we’ll have those discussions,” Asmussen said. - additional reporting by Jay Privman
