Spot PlayGREY BY YOU (#7, 20-1): The M/L says 20-1, but seriously doubt we’ll get that kind of number on a gelding who squared off against some pretty tough allowance company all winter in Hot Springs. Inside speed duel could make the big fave in here (Phat Day) vulnerable, and this is one who could be running on late to pick up the pieces for crafty team of Red Dog and Jockey Joe. – Marty McGee

Derby Trial by Marty McGeeWith Chitu (#2) definitely to scratch, Bayern (#1) definitely will run in the Trial, and probably will be in the 3-5 neighborhood as the remaining Baffert rep. Assuming he runs his race, he’ll whistle, so the quest becomes how to capitalize on that likelihood by expanding into multi-race ventures and the verticals. Myositis Dan (#10) looks like a very usable “under” key, having validated his solid GP dirt efforts with that dominating alw. victory over at Kee. Moreover, he’s likely to get a nice stalk-and-see trip from his favorable post; look for him to be closest to Bayern on the wire. The play: Key #1 on top in tri’s and supers, with #10 in the second and third holes, like this: 1 w 10 w 3/4/5/9 and 1 w 3/4/5/9 w 10, and other variations thereof if desired.

Spot PlayLate Double, 2-8 Randy Morse is extremely live with both of his horses to end this Downs After Dark card, particulary in the first half of this double with the slight turnbacker, Diamond Creek, in race 9. Cap a nice night by ending the multi’s with Tapit Quick (race 10), who met decent types at Oaklawn this winter and stands to move up in a big way on what amounts to a drop in class. – Marty McGee Closer Looks >> |

Spot PlayLUCKY PURSUIT (#4, 7-2) hasn't been seen since last June but she was sharp in defeat there, making a big mid-race run and enduring a very difficult trip, and she has worked well of late; expecting a big effort. -Kenny Peck
