Monday’s 12-race card at Parx Racing features the 21st annual Pennsylvania’s Day at the Races, which boasts five stakes races, each carrying a purse of $100,000 and all restricted to Pennsylvania-breds. The first stakes race on the program is the Dr. Teresa Garofalo Memorial, the day’s eighth race, and it will be run at six furlongs on the main track. Chub Wagon will be a handful as she seeks to stay undefeated for trainer Guadalupe Preciado. The 4-year-old daughter of Hey Chub has won all eight of her starts, including four straight stakes. She holds a clear advantage in terms of Beyer Speed Figures over her six rivals. Jomar Torres will ride Chub Wagon, who drew post 3 and was installed as the 4-5 favorite on the morning line, though she could well be even shorter than that when the gates open. The Mrs. Penny Stakes, scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the turf, drew a field of nine, including main-track-only entrant Trolley Ride, who may get a chance to run if the forecast of weekend showers holds up. The 6-year-old daughter of Flashy Bull, who is 3-1 on the morning line, drew the rail for trainer Bernard Houghton, and she will be guided by regular rider Inoel Beato. :: Bet the races with confidence on DRF Bets. The 5-2 favorite in the Mrs. Penny is the Brad Cox-trained Vault, another who would be tough if the race is switched to dirt. The 5-year-old mare comes off three straight efforts against graded stakes company, including a win in the Grade 2 Ruffian three starts back at Belmont. Florent Geroux will ride Vault, who drew post 3. On the turf, Witch could hold an edge for Houghton and jockey Julio Hernandez. The 5-year-old mare has five grass scores and has run first or second in five straight races. Wait for It comes off a pair of wins against statebred stakes runners and is perhaps the one to beat in the Storm Cat Stakes, to be run at 1 1/16 miles on the main track. The 6-year-old son of Uptowncharlybrown should get ample pace in the Storm Cat, which drew nine runners, as there are several proven speeds signed on. He’ll be tough with a clean trip from post 2. Edward Coletti Jr. trains Wait for It, who will have regular rider Anthony Nunez aboard. Irish Cork, who is listed at 5-1 on the morning line, could have the best chance at an upset as he has steady Beyers and fits the expected race flow as a closer. The Marshall Jenney Handicap attracted a full field of 12 who will sprint five furlongs on turf. Oddly enough, the two morning-line favorites, Admiral Abe (3-1) and Smooth B (7-2), are winless on the grass, despite 14 turf starts between them. That pair holds a clear advantage over the rest if this race is moved off the turf, as their dirt Beyers stand out over the rest. If the Jenney is run on the grass as scheduled, the one to beat may be Flyingontheground. The 7-year-old mare, who drew post 10, is a proven turf sprinter, with four wins and four seconds from 12 such starts. She comes off a pair of runner-up finishes on the grass, her first two starts of 2021. Paco Lopez rides Flyingontheground for trainer Elizabeth Merryman. The Banjo Picker is the fifth stakes and last race on the card, and it’s perhaps the most competitive race of the day. Fortheluvofbourbon is the tepid 3-1 morning-line favorite, with Golden Candy a close second choice at 7-2. But a pair of closers out of the same allowance race on July 26 – Thiscatcanjump and Midnightcharly – rate a look off their efforts in that sprint, which produced a 91 Beyer and saw winner Always Sunshine return to score again in his next start with an 87 Beyer. Midnightcharly missed by just a nose after rallying nicely late in that six-furlong event, and he’s a threat right back at the same distance for Coletti and jockey Angel Castillo. While Thiscatcanjump was four lengths behind that rival, he has worked well in the interim. Thiscatcanjump, trained by Scott Lake, will break from post 1 under jockey Jorge Vargas Jr., while Midnightcharly drew post 3. Post time for the first race on Monday’s card is 12:55 p.m. Eastern. Gates open at 11:30 a.m. and admission is free.
