Chismosa being brought along slowly ahead of Rancho Bernando

Chismosa, the winner of two sprint stakes at Santa Anita earlier this year, was given a brief furlough from extensive training last month in advance of a scheduled start in the Grade 3 Rancho Bernardo Stakes for fillies and mares at Del Mar on Aug. 25.
Chismosa finished seventh of 10 in the Great Lady M. Stakes at Los Alamitos on July 6, her worst result in eight starts this year.
“We decided to give her a rest,” said owner and breeder Jaime Renella. “She’s been running way too often.”

Trained by Rafael DeLeon, Chismosa has worked once since the Great Lady M., going five furlongs in 1:00.20 at Los Alamitos on July 26. Chismosa was given little to do in the weeks between the loss in the Great Lady M. and the workout.
“We lightly-trained her, but nothing heavy,” Renella said. “She did bump herself and cut herself a little bit [in the race], but everything is fine.”
The Rancho Bernardo will not include Tamara, the winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Debutante for 2-year-old fillies last September. Unraced since a seventh-place finish in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita last November, Tamara is in a pattern of jogging and galloping at Del Mar for an expected return to racing at Santa Anita this fall, trainer Richard Mandella said.
“It will be another week or two before two weeks before we breeze her,” he said on Wednesday.
Tamara sustained a splint bone injury in the BC Juvenile Fillies, which kept her out of training until the spring. She has endured additional setbacks in training that have delayed her return.
By Bolt d’Oro, Tamara is out of the four-time champion Beholder.
