Chipofftheoldblock holds recency edge over chief rivals

The recency stakes winner Chipofftheoldblock has on talented comebackers Whiskey Double and Full Impact might give him an edge in the eighth race Sunday at Oaklawn.
The six-furlong sprint is a two-other-than allowance that carries a $50,000 optional-claiming tag. A full field of 12 has signed on, plus the also-eligible Joe Frazier.
Chipofftheoldblock last raced Dec. 5, finishing second by a neck at a similar level at Oaklawn. He was turning back in distance and closed from last in the six-furlong race, which went in a quick 1:09.71.
Jon Court was aboard and has the mount again for trainer Mike Lauer. Chipofftheoldblock won the $102,000 Brickyard for Indiana-breds at six furlongs in June.
Whiskey Double is making his first start since May. He ran second in last year’s Grade 3 Bay Shore at Aqueduct and was third in the Grade 2 Pat Day Mile at Churchill won by Jackie’s Warrior. Ricardo Santana Jr. has the mount for trainer Steve Asmussen.
Full Impact last raced in November 2020. He won his career debut at Monmouth Park, then came back and accounted for a first-level allowance at Aqueduct to push his record to 2 for 2. Florent Geroux has the mount for trainer Brad Cox.

◗ Also on the card, multiple stakes winner Joy’s Rocket launches her season in a conditioned allowance for fillies and mares over six furlongs. The start will be her first since October, when she was second by a head in the Grade 2 Raven Run at Keeneland.
